VAIL, Colorado –A group of local military veterans spent Veterans Day with the students at Red Sandstone Elementary in Vail. Wednesday’s ceremony was the school’s 23rd annual Veterans Day ceremony.

Tom Treat, a fourth and fifth grade teacher, and Carol Thalman, a retired teacher, started the tradition 23 years ago, making the event one of the oldest and most treasured Veteran’s Day ceremonies in the valley.

The flag that flies outside of the school’s’ walls every year on this day is a meaningful one, as it happens to be the flag that Treat brought back from Vietnam many years ago. Treat has taught at Red Sandstone for 31 years and will be retiring this year.

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.
