Vilar Center already thinking about summer
BEAVER CREEK – The Vilar Center for the Arts announced this week that five-time Grammy Award-winning country/folk singer-songwriter and guitarist Mary Chapin Carpenter will kick off their summer 2007 concert series with a special June 1 performance. Tickets go on sale Friday at 11 a.m. In a career spanning two decades and featuring 10 albums to date, Carpenter has created a genre all her own described as a blend of country, folk and rock. Her signature sound features humorous fast-paced country numbers tempered by slower, softer songs that often speak to social or relationship issues. Carpenter’s greatest commercially successful release was 1992’s “Come on Come on,” featuring hit singles like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her.” However, Carpenter has always maintained that her goals as a musician are not necessarily tied to commercial or “mainstream” success.
“When I think of the artists I admire and seek out musically, it’s because I’m curious about where they’re going to go the next time they have a chance to put a record out – it’s not about where I find them on the radio dial, or how many records they’re selling,” Carpenter said during a PBS interview. “It’s more a sense that I’ve connected with what they have to say and it ends up being more than just a momentary connection; I want to continue to see what they have to say.”Her tour will support her newest album, “The Calling,” which was released in March. Tickets are $68 and are available through the Vilar Center Box Office at 845-TIXS (8497) or vilarcenter.org. =================
