Vilar looking forward to spring
Editor’s note: Director’s Corner is a weekly column where Kris Sabel, who is in charge of cultural programming for the Vail Valley Foundation, gives his expert take on shows not to be missed at the Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek.BEAVER CREEK – As we move into the last week of our winter program, I want to thank you all for your support in attending our winter shows. It has been a terrific season with lots of sellouts and happy audience members.I anticipate that by press time, we will be sold out for Chris Botti, “STOMP” and Keb’ Mo.’ I expect there will still be a few tickets for tomorrow night’s performance of “Swan Lake.” This is a great opportunity to see one of the most beloved ballets of all time performed by the great Moiseev Russian Classical Ballet Company. As we move into the spring, we will announce our summer season of performances by the end of April. To get you in the mood for what I expect will be a most exciting summer lineup, we have already announced our first concert – singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter, who will be performing June 1. Tickets went on sale this past Friday, and many patrons are taking advantage of the early sales. We have already sold 25 percent of the house. I encourage you to call the box office today, as we don’t want you to miss the occasion to see this terrific show.Mary Chapin Carpenter’s latest album, “The Calling,” was released earlier this month. The Wall Street Journal called the new effort “mature and uplifting, high-minded and accessible and delivered with controlled passion … a gentle-rocking collection about character, commitment, faith and fate.” Never focusing on commercial or mainstream success, Carpenter is an artist concerned more with her growth as a musician and songwriter. The loyalty of her fan base attests to their satisfaction with this approach. What an incredible opportunity to have her perform in the intimate setting of the Vilar Center. Mary Chapin Carpenter has always been on my list of shows that I would love to see in the Vail Valley. I think she is a perfect fit for the venue, and I can’t wait to add her to my list of favorite concerts. Thanks again for an incredible winter, and we’ll see you this summer at the Vilar Center.
