Vilar Performing Arts Center announces additions
Vail CO, Colorado
BEAVER CREEK ” The Vilar Performing Arts Center announced this week two late additions to their 10th anniversary season winter lineup, which has been the highest selling season in the history of the theatre. Reggae legends ” and former Bob Marley backup band ” the Wailers will perform on March 31, and critically acclaimed Grateful Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra will perform on April 11.
The Wailers formed in Kingston, Jamaica in 1963 as the support band for Bob Marley. With groundbreaking hits like “Stir It Up,” “Trenchtown Rock” and “Get Up, Stand Up,” The Wailers have had a pivotal role in shaping the history of reggae and have remained a force on the music scene for more than four decades.
Their current lineup includes Junior Marvin on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Al Anderson on Lead Guitar, Aston “Family Man” Barrett on Bass, Keith Sterling on Keys, Drummie Zeb on Drums, Marcia Griffiths on background vocals (aka Wailers Sister). The Wailers return to the Vail Valley after a standing-room only show at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater last summer.
Using entire shows from the Grateful Dead’s 30 years of extensive touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) recreates original song-for-song performance set lists for a new generation of fans, as well as old school Deadheads.
DSO performs Grateful Dead classics in the same way an orchestra interprets the music of classical composers ” by capturing and reviving the spirit of the original song. Touring nationwide for nine years to the tune of nearly 1,500 shows since forming, the band’s determined commitment to “raising the Dead” has drawn national media attention.
“Fanatical attention to detail,” raved Rolling Stone. “The hottest Grateful Dead tribute act … a cover band for people who don’t like cover bands,” wrote The Washington Post.
The late additions round out the Vilar Center’s season, with highlights including sold out performances by Burt Bacharach, the Beach Boys and B.B. King, as well as a Broadway/musical series highlighted by “The Producers” and “Hairspray.”
“The 07/08 winter, being our 10th anniversary season, has certainly proven to be our most ambitious lineup to date,” said Theatre Director Kris Sabel. “The caliber of talent, the box office sales, the community response ” it’s been amazing to see how the theatre has grown in 10 years, and continues to grow each season, especially this winter.”
Tickets for The Wailers and Dark Star Orchestra are available by calling the Vilar Center Box Office at 845-TIXS(8497) or by visiting vilarpac.org.
