BEAVER CREEK — Five-time Grammy Award-winners The Robert Cray Band will arrive in the Vail Valley for a one-night-only concert on Monday at 8 p.m. at the Vilar Performing Arts Center.
The band, formed in Eugene, Oregon, in the 1970s, is best known for its unique blues-rock sound and has released nearly two dozen albums in the past 40 years. Cray creates a sound that he says “rises from American roots” and arrives today both fresh and familiar. His band has recorded 20 studio releases, 15 of which have been on the Billboard charts, and has played bars, concert halls, festivals and arenas around the world.
Cray and his band found early influence in the music of the “Master of the Telecaster,” Albert Collins, whom Cray got to see perform live when his senior class voted Collins in as entertainment for their graduation party. The Robert Cray Band also has a sound influenced by soul, rock, funk and jazz.
Since 1995, nearly every album released by Cray has arrived in the top 10 of the Billboard U.S. Blues chart, with 2014’s “In My Soul” and 2007’s “Live from Across the Pond” securing the No. 1 slot. He took home Grammy Awards for his albums “Take Your Shoes Off,” “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” “Strong Persuader” and “Showdown.”
Cray has toured regularly with Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan and has collaborated on albums with John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland. In 2011, Cray was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
