AVON — Vin48 in Avon hosts a pinot noir takeover Wednesday as part of its summer tasting series. Wine importers and distributors from throughout the state will pour their favorite pinot noirs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on vin48’s patio. Over 15 pinots from California, Oregon, France and South America will be offered as part of this weeks tasting.
“Pinot noir remans our most popular varietal at vin48 and this tasting promises to give our guests a better apprecition for the grape and the styles in which it is produced,” said restaurant co-owner Greg Eynon.
Highlighting the takeover will be local master sommelier Damon Ornowski who will feature pinot noirs from Argentina and Chile along with local wine importer Zach Locke of Old World Imports who will pour pinot from Burgundy.
Ornowski is one of only 13 master sommeliers in Colorado and has more than 20 years of experience as a sommelier. He began his career in wine at Pinons Restaurant is Aspen, where he worked as the sommelier. In 1997, Ornowski became the 28th master sommelier in the United States. Since becoming a master sommelier, he studied vineyard management at Napa Valley and has lent his expertise to a number of well-known wineries.
Locke, an Eagle County resident and owner of Old World Imports, will pour pinot noir from Burgundy. Old World Imports and Old World Wine Co. has a philosophy of sourcing and bringing quality French, Austrian and Italian wines to Colorado. The principals used in deciding which wines to import and distribute are based on three main standards: quality, sense of place and value. All of the wines chosen must meet these criteria, Locke said. Locke only works with producers who grow their own grapes and make their own wines with top quality standards, year in and year out. They must be representative of their terroir and varietal. And they must be an appropriate price for their appellation.
Charles Hays, vin48’s chef and owner, will pair the wines with appetizers on the restaurant’s patio. The event is part of vin48’s summer tasting series, which takes place every Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Vin48 serves wines from visiting winemakers, breweries, distillers, importers and industry insiders and pairs them with Hays’ cuisine. All the wines served are available for purchase at discounted prices from Beaver Liquors in Avon. The event is $25 and includes wine tasting and light appetizers. Call 970-748-9463 for reservations.
