VAIL, Colorado In wine there is truth. Just ask Plato he said it. The Italian quote, In vino veritas, adorns the front of Sorrento Spas brochure. The spa opened this spring in the new Vail Plaza Hotel & Club in Vail. The vino theme carries throughout the spa menu thanks to spa director Brian Dalrymple, who chose to feature two vinotherapy skin-care lines.

Olavie products specialize in the chardonnay grape, while dvine products use red-wine grapes like sirah, grenache, chablis, merlot and zinfandel. Like the wine-inspired products, the spas third line Comfort Zone from Italy goes with the Italian theme of the hotel, Dalrymple said. Many people cant live without their weekly, if not nightly, glass of wine. They can do so without guilt, either; the cardiovascular and overall health benefits of red wine have been widely touted over the past few years. Do the same health benefits apply when you slather it on your skin? A new crop of skin-care companies touting the benefits of vinotherapy thinks so. Theyve infused massage oils and body products with grapes, grape seeds and wine extracts, citing research that suggests compounds like L-Tartaric acid and resveratrol can soothe the skin and protect it from the effects of aging. At first, Dalrymple admits, he was a little worried about vinotherapy being more trendy than effective. After meeting with product-line representatives from Olavie and dvine and reading up on the antioxidant, anti-aging properties of the ingredients in the products, his fears were assuaged, Dalrymple said. Seeing the attention and care they give to their products, I think this is something that can stand the test of time. I think it will have its own niche in the spa industry for some time to come, he said.Dalrymple, a certified massage therapist and former spa director at Garden of the Gods Club in Colorado Springs, has been pleased with the customer feedback, he said.Of course you do have your skeptics who wonder, Is it a gimmick? But most of the feedback Ive gotten is the products are effective and the aromatherapy benefits are great, too, he said.

At 6,000 square feet (including the fitness area) and six treatment rooms, Sorrento Spa is smaller than many of their competitors, but thats not necessarily a bad thing, Spa Manager Richelle Hatch said. We want to make people feel like theyre at home, she said. Size wise we cant compete, but we can with the people who work here. They really go the extra mile to make sure the guest is comfortable.Dalrymple agreed. We can provide that intimate attention to detail that I think people are looking for, he said. And Sorrento has many of the same amenities some of the larger spas do, including a steam room and sauna in the women- and men-only areas, a relaxation room with tea and water, a hydrotherapy tub and a couples treatment room. Access to the fitness room and an outdoor pool and three hot tubs is included with every treatment. High Life Editor Caramie Schnell can be reached at 970-748-2984 or
