Volunteers sought for kids adventure race in Vail
VAIL — On Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, children ages 6 to 14 will navigate an adventure course throughout Vail Village and on Vail Mountain that will include a mud pit, a low ropes course, a zipline, a giant slope-n-slide, tubing and more during the Vail Recreation District’s KEEN Vail Kids Adventure Race. Adults who don’t want to be left out of the action are being sought to join in as volunteers and help with the various obstacles, course marshaling, transition areas and the start and finish lines.
Expanded to two days from 2012, approximately 60 volunteers are needed each day to assist with a variety of tasks during the race, which will include assisting and watching 430 young competitors challenge themselves along the way, said Helene Mattison, volunteer coordinator.
“In our fourth year, we’re once again expecting it to be a great time for everybody — both the kids competing and the adults who are supporting them,” Mattison said. “We’ve hired professionals for jobs that require specialized skills to ensure participant safety, but we need volunteers from the community for the transition areas and checkpoints.”
Volunteers are needed from approximately 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. each race day and will be required to attend a short pre-race meeting prior to the event. Volunteers will receive an official event T-shirt from KEEN and lunch from the Vail Marriott Resort and Spa for their time. The race, which was designed by Mattison’s husband and former adventure racer Billy Mattison, has been received so enthusiastically that registration is full on Saturday and reaching capacity for Sunday.
Volunteers are also being sought from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 8-9, to assist with the new Family Adventure Expo, race check-in and pre-race skills clinics, as well as the KidSPORT Strider Cup Race, taking place at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 for ages 2 to 5.
