EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado – Homestake Peak School is the most popular name for the new pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade school in Eagle-Vail.

Thirty-five percent of students and parents who voted online picked Homestake Peak for the name. Notch Mountain School came in second. Four hundred ninety five people voted on five name choices.

The Eagle County School Board plans to pick a name for the school at its next board meeting.

The name will apply to the remodeled Battle Mountain High School building in Eagle-Vail. Students from Minturn Middle School in Minturn and Meadow Mountain Elementary in Eagle-Vail are moving into the building in fall 2011.

Along with picking a name for the school, students are researching possible mascots.

“First graders are looking at the Pika,” school principal Missi Carpenter said.

The schools plan to pick a mascot by the end of October.
