VRD seeks volunteers Saturday

Daily Staff Report

VAIL – Vail Recreation District (VRD) Youth Services will soon open the Imagination Station, a play-based learning loft offering hands-on activities for children ages 2-10. The VRD is seeking volunteers to assist on community work day Saturday to help beautify the facility and its exhibits and earn two hours of free drop-off time at the Imagination Station. The Imagination Station will be located upstairs in the VRD Youth Center and boasts hands-on learning activities including a giant kaleidoscope, marble mania, pulley power and the science of sound exhibits. The station also will include a guided discovery area where the staff will lead art activities and basic science experiments. A “progressive opening” is scheduled for mid-August. According to Chad Young, VRD Youth Coordinator, the Imagination Station will allow kids to play, learn and encourage them to keep exploring, be intellectually stimulated and remain inquisitive. “Our challenge is to create exhibits and playscapes where kids will engage, observe, wonder and question,” said Young. “We have intriguing exhibits that need some final touches to make them visually appealing. Hopefully, the community will get behind this effort with some old-fashioned hard work.” Cooperation between community organizations has assisted in success of creating the Imagination Station including Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, the local chapter of the Colorado Association for the Education of Young Children, as well as local public school teachers who provided guidance. In addition, the town of Vail Public Works crew renovated the facility. Eagle County also assisted with a $10,000 pledge for the exhibits, playscapes and parent-child activities with the expectation that the facility meet the goals of the county’s recently established Early Childhood Initiative. This grant further builds the county’s support of VRD Youth Services’ programming as they provided financial support to increase child care capacity and staff development for the Edwards Elementary School After-School program (in 2004).”This collaboration illustrates a strengthening of previous partnerships between the VRD and Eagle County,” said Diane Johnson, VRD Youth Services Supervisor. “It shows the similarity of our missions and that the county trusts VRD Youth Services’ understanding of Health & Human Services goals.”To volunteer or for more information, contact Young at 479-2292.Volunteer dayVai Recreation District needs help in finishing the new Imagination Station.
