Water presentation is Wednesday in Eagle-Vail
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado – Allen Best, a former Vail-area journalist, will speak at the Eagle River Watershed Council’s Water Wise at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Route 6 Cafe in Eagle-Vail. His topic is “Deciphering the Science: One Journalist’s Take on Climate Change and Water in the West.”
Best was the managing editor during the 1980s and 1990s at two now-defunct local newspapers, The Vail Trail and the Vail Valley Times. In 2004, he wrote a series about the theory of global warming and the effect on the Rocky Mountains.
The series was published in the Vail Daily and won the Wirth Media Chair award from the University of Colorado-Denver. Since that time, he has written frequently about water, global warming, and the West.
“Like many others, I had paid little attention to the climate change controversy. In 2003 I was assigned to write about the topic for a small magazine, and I have been absorbed by it ever since,” said Best, who now lives in metropolitan Denver.
Best also writes about energy and transportation for a variety of publications, and also publishes a monthly newsmagazine called Mountain Town News.
Best warns not to expect a scientist.
“I barely made it through high-school chemistry,” he said. “In an odd way, that lack of scientific aptitude has worked in my favor as a reporter who sometimes covers science. I have to work hard to understand what is being said, in order to explain it.”
“The lingering uncertainties are what make the debate so interesting,” he added.
