VAIL — Watercolorist Gerald Fritzler is in an elite class of American masters of this medium in which subject, although very relevant, is secondary to the medium and its challenges. Whether working wet on wet or laying down warm and cool colors to play off of each other, true watercolor is a very sophisticated medium which an artist can choose to create pieces of work.

Fritzler’s mastery is obvious and impressive after even a quick look at his works. There are only a handful of artists alive today working in watercolor with the ability to achieve such a high level of fine art as Fritzler. His career has taken him all around the world in pursuit of exciting regions, and his mastery of his chosen craft has allowed him to document the world. His travels have taken him to China back in the early ’80s, and since then to Morocco, Greece, Ireland, France, Mexico, Italy, England and beyond. He has captured the natural beauty of all parts of North America; from his home in Colorado to the shores of Gloucester, Mass.; from the southwestern deserts to the California wine country; from the streets of New York to live models in the studio: there is no challenge great enough for Fritzler. He has been able to capture the luminosity and emotion of it all.

Fritzler will be stopping by Claggett/Rey Gallery in Vail today from 2 to 6 p.m. to visit with people about his work and his love for the medium of watercolor.
