Weed, dogs mix at proposed Eagle marijuana dispensary

EAGLE — The developers of Eagle’s latest retail marijuana sales proposal apparently believe weed and dogs are a good mix.

At least that’s how they have planned their new building.

Last week, the Eagle Town Board approved a major development permit for Tumbleweed Dispensary, a medical and recreational marijuana operation planned at a currently vacant lot located at 1125 Chambers Ave. The proposal calls for a 4,000-square foot building for the marijuana sales and a dog park located at the rear of the property as amenity for customers and citizens.

The property has already been through the town’s special use process with a previous application for Rocky Mountain Pure. The property owners are have not changed but the business owners have.

In their review of the proposal, Eagle town staff members said the location of the building and the dog park minimized the impact on the Interstate 70 corridor. Staff determined that the plan meets the town standards and recommended approval.

According to the staff report, applicant Mark Smith will be running the dispensary. He and his partner manufacture edibles and vapes under multiple brands. There is already a Tumbleweed Dispensary located in Edwards and two dispensaries in Parachute.

“The dog park was not a last minute thought; the Parachute location has a dog park as well and it is a nice amenity for customers, and would be open to the public,” noted town planner Tom Boni.

The dog park will generally have the same operating hours as the business.

In their discussion of the development permit, the town board members asked if the business had already received its operating licenses through the state system. Boni noted he did not know the status of the businesses licensing, but added by town regulation, the business cannot open until the owners provide proof of valid licenses.

The town board unanimously approved the development permit application.
