Weekend ends with full contact kayaking

Kayakers participate in the 2017 8ball kayak sprint. The full contact event wraps up the Mountain Games every year.
Special to the Daily |

The 8Ball Kayak Sprint, an annual whitewater battle royal on Gore Creek, brought together kayakers on Sunday, literally. After a floating start at the Covered Bridge in Vail Village, kayakers pushed, shoved and jostled their way through a 200-meter sprint in the narrow confines of Gore Creek.

Along the way, they tried to avoid being knocked off by the 8-Ballers — defensive kayakers in full body armor waiting patiently to attack the sprinters and slow them down throughout the course. In the men’s competition, 17-year-old Hayden Vorhees paddled away victorious. Veteran competitor Emily Jackson won the women’s competition.
