GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado ” A Clifton woman was struck and killed Tuesday on Interstate 70 when she crossed the freeway to assist others involved in a traffic accident, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Christina Sterling-Soffel, 28, was pronounced dead after she was hit around 7 a.m. Tuesday while crossing the westbound lane.

According to a state patrol news release, Sterling-Soffel pulled over on the right shoulder of the interstate and walked across to see if the driver of a crashed pickup in the median needed help.

Sterling-Soffel was walking back across the road when she was struck by a 2001 Dodge Ram driven by 69-year-old Jack Vanhoose of Grand Junction.

Vanhoose was attempting to pass a semi-truck and had moved into the left lane at the time of the collision.

The pickup skidded about 148 feet before the collision, troopers said.

While the crash is still under investigation, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident, the patrol said.

Clifton, where Sterling-Soffel resided, is a community adjacent to Grand Junction, in far western Colorado.
