West Vail bear still on the loose
VAIL ” Wildlife officers were unsuccessful Tuesday in their effort to hunt down and kill a bear that entered at least two West Vail homes in recent days and has become accustomed to eating human food.
Several officers with the Colorado Division of Wildlife aided by dogs searched the North Trail area of West Vail to find the black bear sow and her cubs, Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton said.
Officers, who also set traps Tuesday, plan to relocate, rehabilitate or euthanize the cubs, depending upon whether they picked up their mother’s habit of eating human food, Hampton said.
Wildlife Division policy dictates any bear dangerous to humans must be euthanized, Hampton said. Hampton said anyone interested in helping the community with bear awareness can contact the Division of Wildlife at (970) 947-2920.
