Where were Eagle County’s commissioners?

Cliff Thompson

EAGLE COUNTY – While Summit and Grand counties were represented by a commissioner during the formation of a Western Slope water coalition last week in Beaver Creek, Eagle County’s commissioners were conspicuous by their absence. That lack of attendance drew a letter from local water districts, critical of their absence. But each commissioner had his reasons.Commissioner Peter Runyon, who has been in office for less than a month, said he hadn’t been asked to attend and that he’s still getting up to speed on water and other issues.Commissioner Arn Menconi, who was appointed to a seat on the Upper Eagle Regional Water Authority late last year, had a conflict in his schedule and was unable to attend. He was in Las Vegas, at the Ski Industry Association Convention, representing Snowboard Outreach Society, the nonprofit organization he founded. “I told them I had a conflict and asked them if the meeting could be moved,” Menconi said. Commissioner Tom Stone said he had not been invited.”I didn’t know about it,” he said, adding that had he been, he probably wouldn’t have attended. “I don’t want to be seen as pre-judging something that will likely come before us in a 1041 (land use) application.”Vail Colorado
