White wins state Senate race
Eagle County, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY ” Republican candidate Al White defeated Democrat Ken Brenner in the race for the state Senate District 8 seat, according to unofficial election results.
White ” who held a 4,000 vote lead over his opponent with 91 percent of the vote counted ” said he was always confident he would win the election, but thought it would be close.
“I didn’t feel that it would be a large win because of the Obama and Democrat headwind that’s blowing not only in Colorado but throughout the nation,” White said.
Winning despite that headwind shows the strength of his candidacy, White said.
“I think the fact that I won despite that Democrat headwind signifies that I have represented northwest Colorado well and that I’m a nonpartisan legislator,” he said.
Brenner held a slight lead over White among Eagle County voters. Brenner garnered 7,664 votes and White received 7,236.
Brenner said he plans to continue to work to protect the state’s water supply and promote renewable energy.
“The work I’m going to do in the future won’t change much,” Brenner said. “It’ll just be from the grassroots level.”
Holding onto tourism funding dollars will be high on White’s priority list.
“If we lose those, it’s going to be devastating to our economy in northwest Colorado,” he said. “I look forward to once again working with the citizens of Eagle County and all of the concerns that they have.”
Brenner congratulated White and said he was proud of the campaign he ran.
“We’ve really reached out to the voters and I thought the message we brought forward was one that reflected the values and issues that they wanted to hear,” Brenner said.
