Whooping cough & tetanus vaccines available at Eagle County 9HealthFair

Daily Staff Report

A new whooping cough vaccine will be available to persons ages 18 to 64 at the 9HealthFair on Saturday, April 22 at the Eagle Valley Middle School, 747 E. Third St., Eagle. The event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and is co-sponsored by Eagle County and the Lions Club.Last year, a whooping cough vaccine for adults and adolescents became available for the first time and is widely recommended by public health officials to reduce the spread of this highly contagious respiratory disease. Whooping cough (also known as pertussis) can occur at any age; however, infants and young children are at highest risk for serious, potentially life-threatening complications. Nationwide, reported cases are at a 40-year high. The new whooping cough immunization also contains Tetanus and Diphtheria boosters in what is known as a combined vaccine. Tetanus boosters are usually recommended every 7 to10 years, although individuals that are at risk for passing pertussis to children can receive this new vaccine if they have not had a tetanus booster for at least 2 years. The vaccine, which costs $40.00, is also available at regularly scheduled immunization clinics at Eagle County Health & Human Services.
