Why the Boomers?

Baby boomers are influential for several reasons, experts say. First of all, there are more of them than in the generations that precede and follow them. Now between ages 41 and 61, baby boomers were born during a period of economic prosperity following World War II.

Many baby boomers moved to Colorado in the 1970s, when they were in their early 20s, said Elizabeth Garner, the state demographer.

Colorado has never had a large number of older people in the state, but that should change.

“More and more people in that older age group are staying,” Garner said.

The baby boomers are a wealthy generation. Part of the reason for that is because the baby boomers were the first generation in which women were working. Household income, as a result, was higher.

Baby boomers reached their highest earning potential in the 1990s, when the economy was strong, Garner said. They were also investing in a booming stock market during that time.

Baby boomers are also more highly educated than previous generations, and invested their money wisely, she said.

Finally, the generation stands to inherit money from their parents, who were making money during the prosperity that came after World War II.
