DENVER – Republican Tom Wiens is dropping out of Colorado’s primary Senate contest. The former state senator is backing Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck over former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton.

Wiens was a self-funded Senate candidate who planned to petition onto primary ballots. But on Monday, Wiens dropped out before turning in his signatures. Norton is still planning to petition onto ballots. Signatures are due Friday.

Buck was the only major Republican candidate to participate in the state GOP assembly last weekend. He cruised to victory and will get top placement on GOP primary ballots Aug. 10.

The winner of the Republican primary will face the Democratic nominee, either Sen. Michael Bennet or former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff.
