VAIL VALLEY, Colorado – Apex Mountain School, a mountain skills training and private guide business based in Avon, will again offer its “wildnerness first responder” certification course from Oct. 25 to Nov. 1. in Colorado’s Vail Valley.

A recertification course for those who have previously been certified is set for Oct. 24 to 25, 2009.”

“Our course curriculum and certification is provided by SOLO First Responder and is taught by one of the best instructors I’ve seen in action, at one of the nicest locations available – Nova’s Lodge at Camp Hale,” said says Scott Smith, director of Apex. “It’s an excellent way for us, as an organization, to give back to the mountain community by offering courses that prepare people for safer backcountry travel.”

The Apex Mountain School/SOLO Wilderness First Responder curriculum uses the principles of long-term care, improvised resources, and varying environmental conditions as the framework for learning. The course was initially developed and taught by SOLO in the mid-1980’s.

Created to provide outdoor leaders, guides, and rangers with the knowledge to deal with crises in remote settings, this 80-hour course meets U.S. Department of Transportation standards for first responders.

Sessions include instruction in traumatic situations and other medical emergencies response. Environmental issues such as hypothermia and heat injuries are dealt with in great detail, and practical simulations and labs provide practice in backcountry leadership and rescue skills.

There are no prerequisites for the full course, and students who successfully complete the wilderness first responder course will receive a SOLO Wilderness First Responder card and an American Heart Association Adult Heartsaver CPR card (or equivalent). Price for the full course is $665. The cost for the recertification course is $255, plus $35 for the CPR update.
