Wilderness responder class offered at Camp Hale

Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

CAMP HALE, Colorado – Apex Mountain School, Nova Guides and SOLO Wilderness Medicine are teaming up for a wilderness first responder certification class.

The class will run from Nov. 7-14. There will also be a recertification class Nov. 6-7.

“World-renowned SOLO brought Wilderness Medicine to the United States in 1976. They’re the best in the business – they’re the source,” says Scott Smith, director of Apex. “Our course curriculum and certification is provided by SOLO and is taught by one of the best instructors I’ve seen in action, at one of the nicest locations available – Nova’s Lodge at Camp Hale. It’s an excellent way for us, as an organization, to give back to the mountain community by offering courses that prepare people for safer backcountry travel.”

Created to provide outdoor leaders, guides, and rangers with the knowledge to deal with crises in remote settings, this 80-hour certification course meets DOT National Standards for first responder with additional protocols for extended-care situations. Like all of Apex’s Wilderness Medicine programs, the emphasis of the wilderness first responder class is on prevention and decision-making.

“A typical day consists of a mixture of hands-on practical skills work and information-rich lecture sessions. To increase learning and comprehension, we complement our classroom sessions with indoor and outdoor mock scenarios and simulations,” Smith said.

There are no prerequisites for the full course, and students who successfully complete the wilderness first responder course will receive a SOLO Wilderness First Responder card and an American Heart Association Adult Heart-Saver CPR card (or equivalent). Syllabus, first aid book, and workbook are included in your course fee and will be provided on the first day of your course. Price for the full course is $675. The cost for the recertification course is $290, plus $35 for the CPR update.
