Wildfire burning in wilderness near Silverthorne
Silverthorne, CO Colorado
SILVERTHORNE, Colorado – Local fire officials are monitoring a wildfire that’s broken out west of Silverthorne Monday afternoon. The fire does not presently appear to be very large, according to Lake Dillon Fire Rescue spokesman Steve Lipsher. But with all the beetle-kill trees in the area, he cautioned that nothing can be considered too benign.
Lipsher said the fire is in the South Willow Creek Drainage between Red and Buffalo peaks in the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. As such, the U.S. Forest Service is evaluating the fire to determine a course of action, Lipsher said. He also added that a helicopter was on its way from Rifle to fly over and perhaps determine the size and possible path of the fire.
“Right now we’re in observation and information mode,” Lipsher said. “At present we don’t see a significant amount of fire growth in there, but it is turning out some smoke.”
The fire is not in an area that is immediately threatening to any homes, Lipsher said.
There was no immediate known cause for the fire, but Lipsher said a lightining strike was reported in the area Sunday night.
