AVON — Local wine specialist Koren O’Neill will pour her favorite Spanish wines from the Folio Fine Wine Partners portfolio tonight in Avon as part of vin48’s Summer Tasting Series.

Folio Fine Wine Partners was founded in 2004 by Michael Mondavi, eldest son of Robert, with the goal of bringing exceptional and distinctive wines to American consumers. Folio manages a diverse portfolio that spans five countries, two continents and every premium price point, and works with family wineries that share a passion for making great wine.

To start, O’Neill will pour Fillaboa Albarino, her favorite Spanish summer white.

Albarino, known as the “White Rhine” because of its similarity to Riesling, is an grape variety indigenous to Spain and one of the most sought-after white wines in the world due to its unique and complex flavor profile and versatility with food. Since the founding of the D.O. Rias Baixas in 1988, Bodegas Fillaboa, meaning “the good daughter” in Gallego, has produced some of the rarest and highest quality Albarino in the region.

Bodegas Fillaboa is owned by the Masaveu family, who trace their winemaking history to the 14th century, almost the beginning of Spain’s wine tradition.

Next, O’Neill will pour two Folio wines from the esteemed Palacios Remondo estate in Rioja.

If anyone embodies the promise and spirit of “The New Spain,” it is winemaker Alvaro Palacios. The Palacios Remondo Estate and vineyards are located at high elevations in the eastern part of the region. Palacios’s passion for staying true to the tradition of the land inspires him to make wines that are expressive and authentic to the Eastern Rioja region. He uses Garnacha, which thrives in Rioja Baia, as the dominant grape in his red wine blends. This makes for more full-bodied wines with aromas of Mediterranean herbs, cherries and nectarines, and flavors of mixed berries and blood oranges on the palate.

Charles Hays, vin48’s chef and owner, will pair the wines with appetizers on the restaurant’s patio. The event is part of vin48’s Summer Tasting Series, which takes place every Wednesday and features winemakers and importers from the world’s best wine growing region. The wines are paired with Hays’ cuisine. The event is $25, which includes wine tasting and appetizers. All wines served are available at discounted prices from series partner Beaver Liquors in Avon.
