Winter weather creates traffic snarls

VAIL – A mid-morning tractor-trailer accident was the first of several Thursday as winter weather rolled through the valley.
A westbound Federal Express tandem rig rolled at the bottom of Vail Pass, near the East Vail exit.
Motorists lit up the local 911 switchboard, beginning at 9:22 a.m.
Vail fire fighters extricated the male driver from the 2012 Volvo tractor. Vail police said he was injured, but walked to the ambulance that took him to the Vail hospital. The driver’s age and identity were not released at press time.
A little fuel spilled from one of the tanks, and Vail fire fighters handled that, too.

No other vehicles involved.
“We remind folks to check the tread depth on their tires. They can swing by the Vail Police Department, and we’ll check that for you,” said Annette Dopplick, detective sergeant with the Vail Police Department.
“Loss of traction is the cause of many of the accidents that close Vail Pass,” Dopplick said.
