ASPEN, Colorado ” The ESPN Winter X Games will remain in Aspen through 2012.

Aspen Skiing Co. CEO Mike Kaplan announced the extension of the existing agreement between the Skico and X Games sponsor ESPN at a press conference Wednesday.

Winter X Games 13 begins a four-day run at Buttermilk on the outskirts of Aspen on Thursday. This is its eighth consecutive year at Buttermilk; it was already set to run at the venue through the 2010 games.

“This is very exciting. Back when we first got into the X Games, we had two-year deal. We thought, OK maybe that would last three. For it to last 11 years is just phenomenal,” Kaplan said.

Winter X Games weekend has evolved into one of the busiest of the winter season for the resort, and its economic impact is felt throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, as attendees seek out hotel rooms from Aspen to Glenwood Springs.
