Wisdom: Chinese see it differently

Re: “Olympic, national spirit waning”
First, while I don’t disagree with the gist of your letter Mr. Mayfield, I offer the following for your consideration. Regarding China, and the protests directed at the Olympic torch relay: when the world criticizes China the intended target is the autocratic government. But what many Chinese people hear is that the Chinese nation, culture and people are being criticized. These torch protests have bruised their national pride. They are the first Asian country to host a summer Olympics. This is the event of a lifetime for many Chinese. There is so much pride attached to this. The average Chinese doesn’t see this as the world doing them a favor by protesting against their government ” they see it as an insult to the Chinese nation and people.
