Woman dies in leap from ambulance

Vail, CO Colorado

DENVER ” A 36-year-old woman was killed after she jumped to her death from a moving ambulance along Interstate 25 in Greenwood Village.

Police said Melissa O. Watkins of Aurora was the woman who died after jumping from the ambulance at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

A crew from Action Care Ambulance Inc. was transporting Watkins to a hospital when she suddenly jumped out of the vehicle. It was unclear why she was being taken to a hospital in the first place.

A statement from Greenwood Village police said Watkins jumped from the ambulance on her own accord, was not pushed and did not fall out. No other vehicles struck the woman after she hit the pavement on I-25, but she died later at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood.

An emergency medical technician and a paramedic were both with the woman when she jumped. They were offered trauma counseling.

A cause of death was expected to be released Tuesday, following an autopsy.

Coroner’s officials said Watkins was an organ donor, and that delayed completion of the examination.
