Woman gets 8 years in Denver crash that killed 2
DENVER, Colorado ” A woman who struck two teens on a sidewalk while driving under the influence of prescription drugs has been sentenced to eight years in prison.
Sandra Maul, 65, pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of Nhan Nguyen and Jesse Aguirre, both 14. The two had been walking from Lincoln High School on Nov. 17, 2006, when they were struck.
Tests showed Maul was on three prescription medications for physical problems, depression and anxiety. Maul told police she didn’t remember if she also had taken a sleep aid.
Maul, a former teacher and recovering alcoholic, faced 12 years in prison. Her defense attorney and family had asked that she be sentenced to probation because Maul is living in a nursing home and is no longer driving.
Judge Martin Egelhoff said probation wasn’t an option.
“The loss here is too great. You had no business in that car,” he said. “The loss in this case is so overwhelming and so tragic. These children were so young, and their lives are over.”
Maul apologized to the families at the court hearing Friday.
