Woman slain in Pueblo; suspect kills self
PUEBLO ” A man suspected of fatally shooting a 55-year-old woman took his own life as officers closed in on him, police said.
Diana Yallanardo died early Monday after giving police information about her attacker, who was believed to be her estranged boyfriend, authorities said.
The suspect’s name was not released.
Police said they believe Yallanardo was shot outside her home at about 1:20 a.m. and ran to a house across the street to get help. After talking to police, she was taken to Parkview Medical Center, where she died of a gunshot wound to the chest at about 2 a.m., Coroner James Kramer said.
Deputy Police Chief John Ercul said neighbors saw a man running from the scene, and officers found someone matching the suspect’s description hiding in a driveway.
The man fled, and after a brief chase, he pointed a gun at police Sgt. Wayne Luizza, Ercul said.
Luizza ordered the man to drop the gun, and as Luizza began drawing his own weapon, the man shot himself in the mouth, Ercul said.
A second shot was fired from the suspect’s weapon, which ricocheted off the sidewalk and struck the pant leg of another officer but not the officer himself, police said.
Police believe that shot was triggered by the suspect’s nerve reaction.
Officers did not fire their weapons. An investigation was under way.
