Join Walking Mountains Science Center for “The Science Behind Women’s Ski Equipment” on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Guest speaker Jeannie Thoren has spent her career researching and helping women ski better. During this program she will share her popular presentation and explain its driving philosophy: “Women are not small men.” She will discuss differences in male and female skeletal structure and how these differences influence one’s ability to make a ski perform properly. Thoren will also discuss the evolution of women-specific ski equipment and the science behind the need for gender-specific equipment. Many women experience problems with their equipment that their male counterparts don’t.
The most common skiing problems for women are:
• Sitting back.
• Ski tips wander or cross.
• Heels lifting in the boots.
• Too much foot movement in the boots.
• Cold feet and/or cramping.
• Fatiguing easily.
• Skiing “knock-kneed.”
Thoren owns and operates Jeannie Thoren Women’s Ski Center in Vail with her husband. Ski Magazine said this about Thoren: “Jeannie Thoren spent the past 30 years researching the way women ski. The Thoren Theory evolved as a way to help women skiers radically improve their technique through equipment modification … along the way she found herself revolutionizing the thinking of an entire industry.”
Thoren has also been recognized for her work by Skiing Magazine, North American Snowsport Journalists Association and the Skiing for Women Hall of Fame.
The Science Behind series of classes highlight useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles.
