Women’s lit: Focus on fantasy in Vail
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado – Sirens, a conference focused on women in fantasy literature, will be held at the Cascade Resort in Vail, Colorado on October 1 to 4.
The event, part academic conference and part reader’s retreat, will feature analyses of fantasy books by women and books featuring women characters. In addition to readings and panels, there also will be small-group discussions and hands-on writing workshops.
Guests of honor are Kristin Cashore, Tamora Pierce, and Sherwood Smith. All are popular female fantasy authors whose works relate to the 2009 conference’s theme, “warriors.” Conference organizers cited strong female characters and adventurous plots as the reason the authors were selected.
“These women write extraordinary books, and we’re thrilled to honor them,” noted conference organizer Amy Tenbrink.

“Vail is the perfect location for a conference like this,” said Amy Tenbrink. “We wanted to find a place where readers, scholars, teachers, librarians, and writers could escape into the mountains, but that was near enough to a major airport so that people from across the U.S. and outside the U.S. could attend easily.”
She said the Bookworm of Edwards will be on hand for attendees to purchase books.
