Work on recycling facility under way in Eagle County
Eagle County, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado ” By winter, the county hopes to be more involved in recycling in the Vail Valley.
Construction of a new 14,000 square-foot recycling facility at the county landfill is under way and should be completed in November, officials said.
“We’ll have an opportunity to bring the recycling to us,” said Ron Rasnic, the county’s solid waste manager.
Right now the county has to haul all its recycled materials to other facilities to be sorted, which is a costly process. Once the facility is finished, the county could also charge to have other organizations process their recycling at the landfill.
Neighboring counties and Vail Resorts are possible customers, officials said.

“We don’t have anything definite but it’s a possibility,” Rasnic said.
The commissioners were supposed to tour the site an attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the project this week, but the event was canceled because of weather and hasn’t been rescheduled yet.
Officials are planning for the facility to be able to fund itself within a few years of opening.
“We gotta pour the foundation and go from there,” Rasnic said. “It will be built over the course of the summer.”
Recycling more will decrease the amount of trash going into the landfill and help extend the life of the landfill, officials said.
The building is designed for future expansion, and someday may be able to sort through all the county’s trash for recyclables.
