Worker seriously hurt at Snowmass

SNOWMASS, Colorado ” An Aspen Skiing Co. employee on a snowmobile reportedly suffered serious injuries when he crashed into a tree on Snowmass Mountain in the early hours of Friday morning, while he was working for one of the Snowmass snowmaking crews.

The man, whose name was withheld by the Skico, was airlifted to another hospital, according to Snowmass Village Police Chief Art Smythe.

Smythe said he was not sure which hospital the Skico worker was sent to, although he said it may have been St. Mary’s in Grand Junction. Smythe said his officers worked traffic control to enable an ambulance to pick up the man, who was carried off the mountain by the ski patrol. That was the extent of the police department’s involvement in the case, he said.

Ginny Dyche, spokeswoman for Aspen Valley Hospital, would not confirm Smythe’s report that the man had been flown out of the area for treatment at another hospital.

Jeff Hanle, spokesman for the Skico, said company officials were still gathering information as of about 1 p.m. and that more details would be made available later Friday.
