Xcel hosts pipeline project open house in Avon
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado – Xcel Energy is inviting residents of Eagle County to an open house this week concerning a natural gas pipeline project proposed for next year to replace about eight miles of line along U.S. Highway 6 between Edwards and Minturn.
The open house is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Avon Public Library.
Public Service Company of Colorado, an Xcel Energy company, is replacing 8.6 miles of 6-inch, high-pressure natural gas line with a 16-inch pipe. The project is expected to meet growing customer demand and improve natural gas reliability in the region.
Without increasing the natural gas line’s capacity, the company estimates that the communities of Avon, Minturn, Vail and Beaver Creek, as well as Summit, Grand, Lake and Chaffee counties may experience natural gas shortages in the winter of 2011. Construction is scheduled to start in May 2011 and expected to last until October 2011.
As a regulated utility, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission views this project as Xcel Energy performing regular maintenance on its infrastructure. Before beginning construction, the company must work closely with the local city, county and government officials, including the Colorado Department of Transportation and others directly impacted to incorporate their feedback as Xcel Energy finalize the design and construction plans.
