Musical synergy equals amazing results

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (Dallas Symphony Orchestra) opens each Bravo! Vail season, and yet again this year we have a lot to be excited about. What I noticed the first time I saw this amazing ensemble with its music director Jaap van Zweden was their palpable chemistry. I’ve spent an entire career working for classical music organizations and must say the partnership of van Zweden and this orchestra is unique. It’s as though they are of one musical mind, and the results are spectacular.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has a storied history stretching back to 1900, one that includes some of the most excellent conductors of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Antal Dorati, Sir Georg Solti, Eduardo Mata and Andrew Litton. Dorati early on brought well-respected recordings, Mata took the orchestra around the world and Litton brought them to Vail for the first time. Innovation, excellence and an unflagging commitment to world-class programming have been central to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for nearly 115 years.

Van Zweden, who was born in Amsterdam, has risen rapidly in little more than a decade to become one of the most sought-after conductors. He has been music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since 2008, and holds other prestigious positions in the Netherlands and around the world. In 1995 he began his conducting career at age 19 as the youngest concertmaster ever of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He is now in demand around the globe, and considered as one of the best conductors anywhere. So much so, that in November 2011 van Zweden was named as the recipient of Musical America’s Conductor of the Year Award 2012 in recognition of his critically acclaimed work as music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and as a guest conductor with the most prestigious U.S. orchestras.

Bravo! Vail’s 26th season opens with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra on June 28 in “Hits from the Golden Age of Jazz,” a collaboration with the Vail Jazz Foundation, led by guest conductor Jeff Tyzik. On June 29, the orchestra and guest conductor Bob Bernhardt pay tribute to America’s great movie composer in “Music at the Movies: A Tribute to John Williams & Arthur Fiedler,” centering on Williams’ most famous and beloved scores. Bravo! Vail and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra welcome back Jaap van Zweden on Sunday, June 30, for a performance of Dvoak’s popular Symphony No. 9, From the New World. Garrick Ohlsson, famous for winning The International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 1970, returns to join Maestro van Zweden and his orchestra in a performance of that beloved composer’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

On July 1, Alessio Bax joins artistic director Anne-Marie McDermott for Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos. Concluding the program is one of classical music’s most cherished works, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. July 3 brings exquisite songs by Schubert and Strauss with internationally renowned German baritone Matthias Goerne and closing the program is Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s colorful symphonic poem, “Pines of Rome.”

Last, but certainly not least, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Tyzik break out their finest red, white and blue for the entire community with a Patriotic Concert on July 4. Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott is featured in Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra brings six of the best imaginable programs to Bravo! Vail this summer between June 28 and July 4. In just about one week this magnificent orchestra will offer something for everyone. Don’t miss your chance to see it, right here in the Vail Valley.
