Vail Daily column: GoPro Mountain Games continue growth
Business owners: Be prepared to ride the wave of the summer season kick-off event, The GoPro Mountain Games, this week. This year, the 14th edition of the Mountain Games begins in earnest on Thursday rather than the traditional Friday kick-off, so be sure that your shop(s) are prepared to take full advantage of guests on the extra day of competition and activity, including the 1 p.m. opening of the Expo Villages and free evening concerts at Checkpoint Charlie.
The Mountain Games have become one of Vail’s iconic events with over 50,000 annual event attendees generating an estimated $4.5 million in economic impact and over 5,500 room nights in the town of Vail. In addition, Vail receives some amazing media exposure with over 200 media credentials issued along with prime television coverage on NBC’s World of Adventure Sports and NBC Sports. Two shows on NBC Sports will be dedicated to the Mountain Games and will air later this summer. Great timing to intrigue guests to visit next summer. Special planning on behalf of the Vail Valley Foundation has been made this year to keep many of the sports and events to run through the village core more than in the past, which will keep spectators in town and in front of your business.
More than 10 disciplines are now a part of the Mountain Games, including kayaking, rafting, SUP, mountain biking, road cycling, World Cup bouldering, climbing, fly-fishing, trail running, slacklining, disc golf, obstacle course racing and a half marathon. The family-friendly event also features free demos for kids to try kayaking, bouldering, yoga, slacklining, SUP, zip lining and more. New events this year include disc golf, SUP sprint, raft sprint and the Ultimate River Challenge (SUP, kayak and raft sprints back-to-back). You can view a full schedule of events with descriptions on their website at http://www.mountain games.com. This is a great tool for your employees to reference in order to better serve our guests. Also new this year, the free Outdoor Reels Film Series will be aired outdoors on big screens in Mountain Plaza and Checkpoint Charlie. Each night, Checkpoint Charlie will feature free music, including DJ Dojah, Karl Denson, Natty Vibes, Iration, The Silent Comedy and G. Love & Special Sauce.
On their website there is a listing of “Free Stuff,” meaning free organized activities open to any level of outdoor athlete for participation. There will be free trail runs, community yoga and other ways to get involved as more than a spectator. We are lucky to have such a unique event that draws a great crowd. Make sure to stay informed and get involved! If your organization would like to help promote and be associated with the GoPro Mountain Games, then the Vail Valley Foundation can provide you with free approved imagery, event logos and videos. For access to marketing assets, businesses can contact Paul Abling at email@example.com. You can also find detailed information regarding programming and events at the official website, http://www.mountaingames.com. The Mountain Games are Vail’s official kick-off to the summer season and the event continues to grow. Make sure your business rides the wave of the GoPro Mountain Games this year.
