Vail Daily column: Why all the phone calls?

Eagle County Board of Commissioners
Valley Voices

During the next few weeks, about 500 of you will receive polling calls from Eagle County. We are looking for community input on several topics, so our apologies if we’ve interrupted dinner — or your first quiet moment since the kids went to bed.

Some of you may have already received calls from the school district or the Edwards Metro District. These calls are a useful method of gathering input. Polls help to identify which issues are important and how much support there is for particular policy changes. At this time of year, they are usually connected to possible election questions and your responses can help shape the November ballot.

We’re seeking your feedback on several objectives that fall under one of our strategic plan goals: Eagle County is a great place to live for all. How do we achieve this goal?

We know that the backbone of our economy is a strong and stable workforce. Yet, as many of our younger workers mature, they must choose between spending a disproportionate amount of their income on housing, or accepting less-than-ideal living situations or simply moving away. If they decide to stay and raise a family, then they’ll find childcare can be more expensive than college tuition. Is the availability of attainable housing and affordable, quality childcare important to you as an individual? As a community member? What about as an employer?

Outdoor recreation opportunities are vital to our quality of life. The popular Eagle Valley Trail is 59 percent complete and would connect the entire length of the valley from Vail Pass to Glenwood Canyon. At current funding levels, the trail will take 24 more years to complete. We’d like to know if the community wants us to find a way to finish it before 2040. If so, then what’s the best way to accomplish this?

These are topics people are bringing to us. Now, we need to hear from the larger public and polling is one way for us to gather input from you. It helps us know what the community values and can provide us with strategies to achieve our goals. We value your feedback and that’s why we are reaching out.

Thanks in advance for taking time to share your thoughts. If you don’t receive a call and would like to weigh in, then please contact us at eagleadmin@eaglecounty.us or at 970-328-8605. We look forward to hearing from you.

The Eagle County Board of Commissioners is Jeanne McQueeney, Kathy Chandler-Henry and Jill Ryan.
