Vail Daily Hits and Misses

Got a quick Hit or Miss about issues, decisions or goings-on in the valley? Send yours to editor@vaildaily.com to be included.

MISS: From a reader to the town of Avon. “What happened to the nice bronze ‘Checkmate’ statue that was in Avon’s fourth roundabout? What did they put in its place, a stainless steel ‘@’ sign with some decorative crating around it? Is this supposed to be an improvement?”

HIT: To the Actively Green 2015 campaign progressing as businesses in the valley pick up more environmentally sustainable habits.

MISS: To nonsense, really, about going paperless as if that would help at all in the greater effort to go green with renewable resources. Paper comes from a renewable source and can be renewed itself. Those fancy metals and plastics in our cell phones are the non-renewable resources extracted but once from the Earth. If you truly are serious, don’t use cell phones, tablets or laptops for that matter. Paper comes from a crop. Crops can be grown and harvested … sustainably. Your phone cannot be.

HIT: To the new entry at the Lionshead parking structure. Now that looks like Vail. It’s amazing, really, how long it took for our world-class sensibilities to end our run with what belonged with the New Jersey Turnpike. Congratulations.

HIT: To focus on small businesses and the richness they have to offer to our valley and country in so many ways. Small Business Saturday may be contrived in much the same way as Black Friday and Cyber Monday (oh, brother), but in an albeit smaller way, it can get a message across. One of the main features of community life is the presence of small businesses and stores.

HIT: To the town of Avon’s unveiling of its new pedestrian mall and plaza Friday evening, which is from 4 to 7 p.m. and will feature a winter market, as well. The planning that began well before the recession led to the features fresh for February, when the 2015 FIS Alpine World Championships come to town.

HIT: To Vail Valley churches, schools and other organizations contributing to Operation Christmas Child and sending off more than a thousand boxes of cheer to children across the world. There is a Santa.

HIT: Can’t say it enough — to snow. Especially early snow. More fun, of course. And it sure seems to inspire interest in ski vacations.

HIT: To so much of Vail and Beaver Creek open for skiing. Wow. Can anyone remember when so many lifts were running so soon?

HIT: To Chris Anthony enduring over the years to appear in his 25th Warren Miller extreme ski film.
