Vail Daily Hits and Misses

Got a quick Hit or Miss about issues, decisions or goings-on in the valley? Send yours to editor@vaildaily.com to be included.

HIT: To the backbone of the 2015 championships — the 2,200 volunteers making it all work. That’s about 5 percent of the valley’s full-time population, by the way. Pretty incredible.

MISS: To the American right, reduced to “yes, but” at each bit of good news about the economy now. Once delighted to saddle President Obama with full responsibility (never mind that other guy, W.) when the news was bad, they search increasingly in vain to avoid a consistent measure since that would lead to admissions they really, really don’t wish to concede. Pretty silly when market forces are so much more powerful than an administration. But there you go when in the grip of something stronger — demonization of the “other” party.

HIT: To Eagle Valley Middle School for testing among the state’s leaders for the fourth year in a row. Nice work, and congratulations on earning the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award.

HIT: To sweet love stories, including yours, in 400 words or less. TV8 and Vail Daily High Life Editor Caramie Schnell — who hasn’t put a professional name to her love story yet (it’s Petrowsky and comes with marriage and motherhood) — are running their annual love story contest. Count this as a last reminder, as the deadline is Friday. Send your story, with photo, to cschnell@vaildaily.com and tv8vail@vailresorts.com.

MISS: Just about the only time there would be one regarding fresh snow. But after a pretty dry January, the snow gods decided it’s time to bring that particular gift during the Championships. And so cancellations and rescheduling has become a fine and fluid skill.

HIT: To everything around the races that make this a grand festival. Can’t snow away those events.

HIT: To Lindsey Vonn reaching the podium in her first race, the super-G. Sure, everyone around here was pulling for gold. But she skied hard and this sure beats rehabbing a knee.

HIT: To Slovenia’s world-famous Tina Maze, who a couple of months ago managed to go unrecognized at the Vail Daily while buying a fistful of ski posters. Her cashier was thoughtful enough to explain that the Championships would be held here soon while she chose and purchased her posters. She smiled pleasantly and suggested she just might come back to town for those. Indeed.
