Vail Daily Hits and Misses

Got a quick Hit or Miss about issues, decisions or goings-on in the valley? Send yours to editor@vaildaily.com to be included.

HIT: To the military people who have put it all on the line through our history to protect our nation, which is to say … us. Question why war exists, quibble with policies, sort out the good wars from the bad all you like. We’re talking here about the souls who answer this call.

HIT: To big ol’ snowstorms in one of the few places that looks to such events with glee.

MISS: To difficulty filling the ranks of ski season seasonal workers, especially as the countdown to the 2015 FIS Alpine World Championships ticks away. That familiar obstacle affordable housing has returned with a vengeance, which should be no surprise since it has plagued the valley ever since we became snow farmers. You’d think this would be one thing we’d figure out by now.

HIT: To the excitement building around the U.S. Ski Team. Of course, around here, having the top two female ski racers as locals, Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin, only adds to the anticipation for the World Championships in February. Don’t forget Sarah Schleper, now skiing for Mexico as she aims for the championships on home turf.

HIT: To … did we mention the snow. Pretty soon, with luck, it will be ho hum, another day another snowstorm setting up the ski mountains for a great season.

MISS: To drivers who apparently don’t notice something has changed from their summer workday commute up I-70 at 90 mph, tailgating everyone going any slower, from 89 mph on down. This one is for one of those … who did this in a white van. Sure enough, off the road he went, slowing everything needlessly to a crawl — still faster than that joker in the end.

HIT: To the veterans and schools and community that took note of Veterans Day to acknowledge our veterans’ service to country.
