Vail Daily Hits and Misses
Got a quick Hit or Miss about issues, decisions or goings-on in the valley? Send yours to email@example.com to be included.
HIT: To the state taking steps to better coordinate ski traffic in and out of the mountains, from snowplows to Auto Socks and other means of keeping passes from gumming up with accidents.
MISS: If thinking that the peak hours can be baited and bribed away with prizes and officials take their eye off actually improving the transportation corridor.
HIT: To Vail Resorts, company in the company town, reporting strong business results even with Lake Tahoe having another dry ski season. A successful company can do more that helps lift the other boats in the community, and their growth trends also reflect the success of the other businesses this season. While everything of course isn’t perfect, the company, community and ski towns are doing pretty darn well right now.
HIT: To VR paying back all the money it borrowed to finance the acquisition of Park City Mountain Resort last year.
HIT: To former Eagle County commissioner Arn Menconi standing up for his beliefs, while being hustled off to jail after interrupting Secretary of State John Kerry in a Senate hearing to protest military force against the Islamic State. How many of us only wish we told Washington exactly what we think?
HIT: To the Vail Board of Realtors helping shape policy dealing with protecting towns and homes from wildfire in those many border areas here where forest meets house. The Realtors group advocates for education and recognition of efforts homeowners make to protect their homes short of onerous expenses and unnecessary hits to their insurance ratings.
HIT: Oh why not, to the town of Minturn dropping in new fancy pants public bathrooms at Eagle Park. We’re not quite biting on the insistence that these works of art achieved with 3-D modeling and precise fabrication are less expensive than other alternatives, it is pretty cool to have museum quality loos. Seriously, though, some plumbing, some nail slapping and they’d have functional facilities at well under the $100,000 price tag, grants or no grants.
MISS: To warm, dry, beautiful days. Fine in July. But March? Not so much. At least our snowpack is in pretty good shape for skiers and for precious water. Still, the right weather is some more good, snowy days.
HIT: To the builders starting to pound more nails, mix more cement and so on of late.
HIT: To community leaders looking to build a model early childhood center for 225 kids in the Vail Valley.
HIT: To the idea, at least, of reshaping TABOR into a more effective and less draconian part of the state Constitution. There’s plenty to like about the Taxpayers Bill of Rights, but lots of flaws in it, too.
HIT: To Avon’s planning commission finding a way this week to move the process along for a new medical complex and fire and police headquarters on Nottingham Road while ensuring that the community gets a proper look at the plan and can comment. Nice to see some light tapping on the brakes, at least, from the town’s fast and furious methods of approvals that turned out a bit rash.
HIT: To Eagle opening those great trails April 1, a couple of weeks earlier than most years due to warmth and good trail conditions. Of course, that practically guarantees snow, rain and more snow. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing.
HIT: To the Pink Vail fundraiser for the Shaw Regional Cancer Center’s Spirit of Survival program. Congratulations.
HIT: Local ski stars Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin finishing out great years. Vonn only earned and then built on her all-time record in career World Cup wins as well as taking season titles in downhill and super-G. Not bad for a comeback year from knee surgeries that sidelined her. Rising star — we only say this because she wants it that way for awhile longer — Shiffrin won her third straight season title in slalom and second in a row in the World Championships, this time for her home crowd.
