Letter: Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Proposition KK

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the ongoing crisis of domestic violence in Colorado and across the nation. Last year alone, 94 Coloradans lost their lives to domestic violence, the highest number ever recorded in our state. More alarmingly, 86% of those homicides involved firearms, highlighting the deadly intersection between domestic violence and gun violence.

This November, Coloradans have an opportunity to take meaningful action to address this crisis by voting “yes” on Proposition KK. Proposition KK would impose a 6.5% excise tax on gun manufacturers and retailers, generating an estimated $39 million annually. This funding will directly support victim services — including domestic violence shelters, crisis hotlines, legal advocacy, and counseling — many of which are struggling to keep their doors open due to drastic cuts in federal funding. Without this critical funding, many victims of domestic violence may be left without a lifeline in their most desperate moments.

As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it’s important to remember that every survivor deserves the support needed to break free from violence. Proposition KK offers a chance to make sure domestic violence survivors get the help they need and to support gun violence prevention programs that can reduce the lethality of domestic violence cases.

I urge my fellow Coloradans to vote “yes” on Proposition KK this November. Together, we can save lives and create a safer, brighter future for survivors. Learn more at YesonPropKK.com
