Letter: Don’t be fooled by Airbnb

Airbnb and other short-term rental special interest groups have committed $100,000 to defeat Ballot Issue 2A and make it harder for you to live in our community. They have begun to flood our phones with text messages, send mailers, leave flyers on our doors and generally spread misinformation to try and convince us to vote against our best interests and the best interests of our local community.

Before you vote on 2A, make sure you get the facts.

Fact: The town of Vail is delivering on its commitment to community housing. Since 2020, the town of Vail has responsibly invested $274 million in community housing projects. These community investments include funding for Vail InDeed, 72 units at the Residences at Main Vail, 302 homes at Timber Ridge, 268 units at the Southface Apartments, and land purchases for future housing developments.

Fact: 100% of the funds generated by 2A will be invested in community housing. It is illegal under Colorado law (TABOR) to spend voter-approved funds on anything other than what the voters approved. Ballot Issue 2A is a tax for housing, and because of TABOR, the money raised must be spent on housing.

Fact: Tourism in Vail is not declining. Year-to-date (through August) sales tax revenues are up 2.75% vs. 2024 and year-to-date tax revenues from all lodging sources, which include short-term rentals, are flat.
