Letter: Eagle County needs more trash cans

In Eagle County, we either have no trash cans or all of them are too close together. We need to spread out trash cans and add more where there are none.

Eagle County should add more trash cans for several reasons. According to an article titled, “The Psychology of Trash Cans,” “Research has shown that increasing the number of trash cans in an area and ensuring their proximity to high-traffic areas, such as parks or city centers, can reduce littering.” This shows that with more trash cans in the right places, we can reduce littering.

Keeping our county clean is a big job, and adding more trash cans will help with that. We also need trash cans for less frequent trash pickups. The text states, “By placing trash cans in visible and strategic locations, people are more inclined to dispose of waste properly.” When there are more trash cans, people will be more likely to throw away their trash, helping with cleanliness and reducing litter.

Lastly, more trash cans are safer for animals. When people can’t find a trash can, they are less likely to pick up litter. This harms wildlife, as animals may mistake litter for food. Adding more trash cans would help keep the county clean and protect animals.

Some might say we already have enough trash cans in public areas, but there are still many places without any. To sum up, we need more trash cans to reduce litter, protect animals, and keep our county clean.
