Letter: It’s time to pay attention to the Colorado governor’s race

We will elect a new Colorado governor in 2026. There are two leading Democratic candidates: Attorney General Phil Weiser (who is term-limited so cannot run again) and Sen. Michael Bennet (who has over four years left in his Senate term).

I strongly believe that Phil Weiser is the best candidate and that, if you get to know him, you will agree. I hope you will come meet him when he is in Edwards on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Phil has visited Eagle County many times as AG. He knows us, he knows what we care about, and he fights to protect us and our rights. As our AG, he fought for all of us when he filed an antitrust lawsuit to stop a megamerger between Safeway and Kroger, which would have raised our cost of living. He fought for the most vulnerable among us when he successfully took on Big Pharma, bringing back over $850 million to help our state deal with the tragic opioid crisis.

And he fought, on a bipartisan basis, for our democracy when he joined the Mesa County Republican District Attorney to successfully prosecute election crimes (Phil and the DA received the 2025 Leaders of Democracy Award from the League of Women Voters of Colorado for doing so). These are just a few examples of what he has already done. As governor, Phil will continue to be a fighter for all of us.

Please join Phil at CMC Edwards on Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. for a discussion of his plans and of our priorities — I know you will be as impressed as I am and will want him to continue to fight for Colorado as our next governor.
