Letter: Let’s honor a skiing veteran on the mountain
Thursday is a National Day of Mourning for a veteran, a veteran who became president. In my early days as a ski instructor (1997-1999), I often encountered Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter with their family skiing at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen. Yes, they were both regular skiers.
So on Thursday, we veterans of VFW Post 10721, we are going to honor that veteran by being the veterans we have become: veterans who ski on Thursday.
Early birds meet at the Legacy Hut at the top of chair 4 at 10 a.m.
Then the regular crowd meets at the Legacy Hut at 11 a.m. We will distribute some of our new Vail Veteran bibs (thank you Wes) and get a grand photo of our beautiful skiers at 11:05 a.m. (Tamara and Clark, that means before 11:15.) (Dan Smith and Kenton should consider joining us for this photo.)
Snow has been holding up pretty well on our normal runs, but since this is our first skiing excursion of the year, we’ll take it easy.

Then, lunch at Vendetta’s at 1 p.m. Any and all veterans and friends of veterans are always invited for lunch. Often, this is a bigger gathering than the skiers, and usually, we get another photo. Please join in.
Then on Friday, we will have our usual TGIF at Route 6 beginning at 5 p.m.
Happy New Year to you all, and let’s honor a skiing veteran on the mountain.
