Letter: Questions about school funding
Thursday’s print edition carried an article about declining student enrollment and funding. There is a decline in how many students there are in the local district’s schools, which might lead to reduced funding from the state. The article did not deal with some pertinent issues.
First, if there are fewer students, why shouldn’t the financial needs of the district be less? I wonder if one of Parkinson’s laws deals with this question. Second, there was no mention of kids who pursue education alternatives, like private schools and homeschooling. Are those numbers also declining? And is there a significant number of kids who just aren’t doing any of the above?
Third, charter schools are public schools, so their students should be included in the headcount. Has there been a decline in the number of students pursuing this option?
