Vail Daily column: ‘Yes’ on A and B

As someone who has served on elected boards and public policy issues for a number of decades, I wanted to lend my voice in support of the ballot issue of by the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District.

In a nutshell, the district has been required to fund expensive improvements to its wastewater treatment plants by the state and federal government. The bond election is the result of that and is a responsible and prudent move by the district and its board of directors.

Using a general obligation bond is the cheapest way to go and preserves the most public money. Other funding methods cost more because they bear higher interest rates. Ballot question “A” addresses this.

To be able to use the cheaper financing, the district needs your vote of support on “B,” which allows it to spend the bond issue money. It also allows the district to pursue additional state grants that will further reduce the cost of the project. Your right to vote on any future tax increases is not affected by voting yes.

I urge you to vote “yes” on both ballot issues. It’s the best solution and saves the most public money.
